Emily DickinsonThere is no Frigate like a Book To take us Lands away Nor any Coursers like a Page Of prancing Poetry — This Traverse may the poorest take Without oppress of Toll — How frugal is the Chariot That bears a Human soul.
About This Quote
William Shakespeare was a great poet and playwright. It is interesting to see his thoughts on the importance of reading and writing. He says that the poorest person can take a break from their daily labor and read a book without having to pay for it. He also says that people are not weighed down by the burden of being human, but are instead carried by books.
Since books are so light, one could easily take them with them anywhere, even across the ocean! While traveling, he says that one should not have to pay tolls or taxes. One doesn’t have to pay the cost of taking something with them since they are not carrying anything heavy. Rather than being weighed down by being human, they are free to be carried by their books.
